The Yaskawa HV-75AP4 is a specialised magnetic contactor (winding selector) intended for switching between two sets of windings on a CNC machine's spindle motor. Spindle motors with a wide speed-range requirement are built as so-called dual-winding motors — they have two separate windings in the stator, one optimised for low speed with high torque (star connection) and the other for high speed with high power (delta connection).
The HV-75AP4 physically switches between these windings while the motor is running, extending the spindle's constant-power range by up to a 12:1 ratio — this removes the need for a mechanical gearbox and reduces the machine's design complexity. The switching is controlled by a 24 VDC signal from the spindle drive; the switching action itself takes a few tens of milliseconds and is accompanied by the contactor's characteristic mechanical "pop" sound.
In practice this is a frequently overlooked part when diagnosing spindle problems — a contactor fault shows up as a restricted speed range or a completely non-functional spindle, often without an explicit drive alarm. Test: after powering the machine on and reaching the ready state, you should hear a loud "pop" as the contactor closes. Without this sound the problem is likely in the HV-75AP4 or in the spindle drive's control signal.
