The SMC VF5120-3D-03 is a five-port pilot-operated solenoid valve from the VF5000 series, intended for controlling pneumatic actuators (cylinders, clamps, manipulators) in industrial machines. Functionally it is a 2-position 5/2 valve — it has 5 ports (1 supply, 2 outlet, 2 exhaust) and 2 stable positions controlled by a solenoid coil. When de-energised it holds its position by spring; when the 24 V coil (or another voltage per order) is energised it switches to the second position.
The designation decodes as follows: VF5120 = VF5000 series, single-coil version, 3 = voltage variant (typically 200 V AC / 110 V AC / 24 V DC — always check the nameplate), D = DIN connector with control cable, 03 = Rc 3/8" port size. The valve includes a built-in rectifier for AC voltage and a built-in strainer in the pilot section that protects against contaminants in the compressed air.
The SMC VF5120-3D-03 valve is used in the pneumatic systems of CNC machines — typically for controlling clamping cylinders, automatic tool change (ATC) manipulators, pneumatic door mechanisms and other auxiliary pneumatic functions.
